From the free first chapter

Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University in the US. After reading his earlier book, Deep Work, many readers wrote to him: we get it about focus at work, but it's our personal lives that are being lost to our phones. Interestingly, Newport himself has never had a social media account.

At the end of 2017, he invited his newsletter readers to an experiment: a 30-day break from optional technologies. More than 1,500 people signed up. Their experiences became this 2019 book. The core message: small tips (turning off notifications, screen-time apps) don't work; what you need is a clear philosophy of technology use.
