From the free first chapter
Peter Attia is a physician who trained in surgery at Johns Hopkins before turning his practice to longevity. Written with journalist Bill Gifford, Outlive came out in 2023 and became a major bestseller.
Attia divides the history of medicine into three eras. Medicine 1.0, from Hippocrates to the nineteenth century, ran on observation and guesswork. Medicine 2.0 brought germ theory and antibiotics and tamed many of the “fast deaths.” But with slow-growing diseases it often arrives too late.
