From the free first chapter
The first edition of Paulo Coelho’s short novel, published in Brazil in 1988, ran to just 900 copies, and the publisher declined to reprint it. It became one of the most translated books in the world: a story as simple as a fairy tale, with a lesson at every turn.
An old Gypsy woman in Tarifa interprets it: go to the pyramids, and you will find the treasure. In return she wants one tenth of it. Santiago is disappointed.
