From the free first chapter

Eric Ries offers a simple definition: a startup is a human institution designed to create a new product or service under conditions of extreme uncertainty. A tech company in a garage counts. So does a new division inside a big corporation, or a new online shop down the street, as long as nobody yet knows for sure what customers want.

When they finally sat down with customers, the core assumption fell apart. People didn’t want to drag their existing friends into a new tool; they wanted a place to meet new people. Much of those six months’ work went in the bin.
