From the free first chapter

Angela Duckworth once taught seventh-grade math at a New York public school. She noticed that her quickest students weren’t always the ones doing best, while some “ordinary” students steadily pulled ahead. That puzzle eventually took her out of the classroom and into psychology.

The results surprised everyone. It wasn’t the academy’s elaborate admissions score that best predicted who would make it through; it was the grit score. The same pattern showed up in her studies of salespeople keeping their jobs, students finishing high school and children going deep into the National Spelling Bee.
